Many mums- and dads-to-be, feeling that becoming a parent can be a traumatic experience. However, there is little need to fret because there is evidence that the introduction of a baby into the world reinforces your emotions. A recent study by researchers at the Kinsey Institute examines the emotional effects of childbirth, making women less prone to stress and more able to handle difficult situations that do not directly relate to their new child .
This change in emotional reaction occurs due to neuroendocrine state of a new parent. This condition reduces the activity in the amygdala, the part of the brain that control emotional responses of a person. As these postnatal women were less distressed by disturbing images the researchers presented to them, compared to women who had not given birth.
"Our findings extend previous work showing a lower stress response to motherhood that its probably better ability to cope with this new dramatic role," says Heather Rupp, lead author of the study 'response amygdala to negative images postpartum against nulliparous women and intranasal oxytocin.
So, if the idea of becoming a parent is stressful for you, it should comfort you to know that your postpartum body produces a natural response to cope with the responsibility. you will be able to concentrate on caring for your new baby while taking the daily stress in stride.
